About Us

McWicky's Wife:

I have been a country girl now for the past 6 years and I LOVE it. I can't imagine myself ever living back in the fast paced city, like Kitchener-Waterloo (were I grew up and lived for 30 years).

Country life has taken some getting use to, staying on top of what foods are available, at what time, has definitely been the biggest adjustment. The other big adjustment is getting use to the fact most businesses in the small towns are closed on Sunday's.

A bit about me, well I moved to Huron County 6 years ago, after meeting my now husband Mike. I have 2 of the most amazing boys (ok really it's 3 because of course my husband is amazing). We have several furry children as well, Gypsy, Shyla & Penny, Jenna & Simba and I also founded an animal rescue several years ago.

I keep myself quite busy, my main focus aside from my family is the animal rescue, when I have some downtime I love to forage for food, can and craft. No one ever leaves my house without a "care package" usually consisting on canned goods and homemade maple syrup.

This is my first blog, so please bare with me as I get more comfortable. I am excited to share my experiences with you, the readers and also share some great recipes, tips, tricks, and also thrift store treasure hunting (which in my books is a ton of fun).

Mouse:

I'm a single Mom who has recently moved from the city (Kitchener-Waterloo, ON) up to a small town in Huron County. I have tried to leave the city on several occasions in the past, only to be drawn back for family.

I have always been drawn to country/small town/sustainable living and I sort of stuck out like a sore thumb in the city hanging my laundry out to dry, complaining when my tomatoes weren't doing well in my garden, wanting to be off the grid as much as possible (seriously, I got heckled because I prefer candlelight over ceiling lights and I believe in putting a sweater on before turning up the heat or doing things like re-using dish water to flush the toilets or to kill weeds on the sidewalks).

This past year was a very difficult year for me and I made the decision to leave the city for good in June of 2015 when I snapped and slammed on the brakes and wished I had the baseball bat in the back of my truck so I could get out and beat the hood of the minivan that had been tailgating me for 10 minutes who almost ate my rear bumper. The city is all rush-rush-rush-me-me-me and that's the complete opposite of how I live my life and after 35+ years of it I was on the verge of having a breakdown. It was at that point that I KNEW that I had to get out, no matter how difficult it would be.

In the month and a half that I have been out here, I am way calmer and more at peace. I am rapidly getting back my true self and not the angry, jaded person that I was becoming in the city. I look forward to embracing my inner "bumpkin" and getting back to my roots. Thankfully, the skills that I haven't quite acquired yet are being rapidly obtained through my time spent with my good friend McWicky.

I'm looking forward to living off the land as much as possible, foraging for food, hunting/fishing, bartering, and generally being surrounded by people who live the same sort of life that I strive to live.
